Geyser Replacement in Johannesburg

A burst or failing geyser is one of the most common emergencies in Johannesburg homes. Supa Nova replaces, installs and repairs electric geysers across the northern and eastern suburbs. Because we’re both plumbers and electricians, we handle the water side and the electrical connection in one visit.

Signs your geyser needs attention

  • Water dripping from the ceiling or the overflow pipe outside
  • The earth leakage trips when the geyser switches on
  • No hot water, or water that is only lukewarm
  • Banging, knocking or hissing from the roof
  • Rusty or discoloured hot water

Some of these are repairs, such as a new element, thermostat or valve. Others mean the tank itself has failed and needs replacing. We tell you which before quoting.

What to do if your geyser bursts

  1. Switch off the geyser at the DB board.
  2. Close the cold-water supply to the geyser. The isolating valve is usually next to it in the roof. If you can’t reach it, close the main water valve at the meter.
  3. Open a hot tap to release pressure.
  4. Move valuables away from the leak and put buckets down.
  5. Call your insurer and us. Most home insurance covers burst geysers. We don’t work for insurers directly, but we can give you a report to support your claim.

Geyser services

  • Full replacement: we remove the old geyser and fit a new one with a new drip tray, valves and vacuum breakers, to SANS 10254.
  • Element and thermostat replacement: the most common geyser repair, especially in hard-water areas.
  • Pressure and safety valves: replaced when they drip or fail.
  • Geyser timers and blankets: to cut electricity costs.
  • Electrical testing: we check the isolator, wiring and earth leakage protection at the same time.

Why Johannesburg geysers fail early

Hard water is the main reason. Scale builds up on the element and the bottom of the tank, so the element runs hotter and burns out sooner. Over time the scale also speeds up corrosion. Pressure surges after water outages add stress to valves and joints. A geyser that might last 10 to 15 years elsewhere can fail sooner here if it is never serviced.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a geyser replacement cost?

It depends on size, brand and how much pipework needs replacing. The travelling fee is R400. Our hourly rate is available on request, and quotations are free. We cover costs in more detail in our geyser replacement cost guide.

Can a plumber fix a geyser, or do I need an electrician?

A geyser needs both. The tank, valves and pipes are plumbing work, while the element, thermostat and wiring are electrical. Supa Nova does both.

How long does a replacement take?

A like-for-like replacement takes 2 to 4 hours on average.

Do I get a compliance certificate?

Yes. A geyser installation must be certified, and we supply the certificate with the job.
