Electrical COC in Johannesburg

If you’re selling a property in South Africa, you need a valid electrical Certificate of Compliance (COC) before transfer. Supa Nova’s registered electricians inspect your installation, fix anything that fails, and issue the COC. This is a legal requirement under the Electrical Installation Regulations.

Need a COC? Call 011 485 1324 or 082 891 1577.

What the inspection covers

  • The DB board, breakers and earth leakage protection
  • Earthing and bonding, including the geyser and metal pipes
  • Wiring, plugs, switches and light fittings
  • Fixed appliances such as stoves, geysers and pool pumps
  • Any additions or alterations since the last certificate

How it works

  1. Book the inspection. Tell us the property size and whether there’s a cottage, pool or outbuildings.
  2. We inspect and test. How long it takes depends on the size of the property.
  3. You get a list of faults, if any, with a quote to fix them.
  4. We fix the faults and issue the COC. If nothing fails, we issue the COC straight away.

Common reasons homes fail

  • No earth leakage unit, or one that doesn’t trip within the required time
  • Missing or loose earthing on the geyser
  • Exposed wiring, open junction boxes or missing blanking plates in the DB board
  • DIY alterations, like extra plugs, garden lights or a pool pump, done without a certificate
  • An inverter or solar system installed without being added to the COC

Frequently asked questions

How much does an electrical COC cost in Johannesburg?

The inspection fee depends on the property size. Repairs are quoted separately. The travelling fee is R400. Our hourly rate is available on request, and quotations are free.

How long is a COC valid?

The regulations don’t set an expiry date. However, a COC only covers the installation as it was when inspected. Most buyers, banks and conveyancers ask for one issued within the last two years, and any change to the installation needs a new certificate.

Who can issue a COC?

Only an electrician registered with the Department of Employment and Labour as an electrical contractor.

Do I need a new COC after installing an inverter?

Yes. An inverter or solar system changes the installation, so it must be certified.

Who pays for the COC when selling?

Usually the seller, but it’s whatever your sale agreement says.
